No power to fuel pumps.
I own a 1994 Volvo 940, and a few weeks ago it died on the freeway. I was driving, then I started slowing down and then the engjne sputterd amd stopped. Afterward, it would start for a bit, and crawl maybe 5 feet before shutting off.
I found out that fuel wasn't being pumped into the engine, so I bought a new relay - it's a universal relay, short and green, while the riginal is a tall white one hope that I didnt buy the wrong kind of relay.
Anyway, there is no power getting to my pumps, listened for any noise when putting key jnto on position, and checked the lines for pressure. A little gas came out of the little nozzle to check, but it was under little to no pressure. Does my car have an inertia switch, could that be the problem? Thanks for any and all help.
I apologize if any terminology is wrong, very new to working on cars. Have had this car for about 2 months. First car also.

First, get the right relay. No inertia switch.
Does your Original Relay click twice as you turn the key on? You may have to have your finger on it to feel the clicks.
Is your car Bosch (2 pumps) or Regina (1 pump). Square coil, long wire, or round conventional coil with a short wire on the firewall?

According to this, what I think is my fuel pump relay is actually my overdrive relay. Thing is, I dont have anything where the fuel pump relay is supposed to be

some 94/95 940 non-turbos have a different fuel pump relay. almost noones parts catalogs reflects this properly.
on that relay panel, position "M" is the 2nd from the right on the row closest to you. on older 940s, this was the rear fog light relay. on the 94/95 non-turbo cars, thats the fuel pump relay, and position "E" (the one pointed to as the fuel pump relay in your drawing) is empty (in fact, it has no pins in the socket)
this "M" relay is a different relay than the earlier relay used... its a simple relay, the older one was a double relay. "M" is used if you have bosch OR regina/rex injection on a 94/95. if you have a turbo, then "E" is used.

Thank you very much.
Im trying to find a replacement relay RockAuto, but the relays they have under "fuel pump" don't match up to my old one. Under Overdrive relay though, there is one that looks just like it... should I buy that one?

ugh, Rock Auto is not a good source for Volvo parts.

there's actually 3 different versions of a non-turbo 1994 940. you could have a "B230FD" "Pulsair" system, a B230F Bosch LH 2.4 system, or a B230F Regina/Rex system.
Volvo PN 9130270, described as "Relay blue - Fuel Injection - "M", same part is used for LH2.4, Regina, or Pulsair, but not for the B230FT turbo.
The OD relay is a completely different part number, 1398154.
9130270 is also used as the foglamp relay, if you have them, thats also blue, in position "F" (middle row, second position from far left)
and ouch, it appears 9130270 is a discontinued part. ok, um. is fuse 1 good? that provides power to the whole EFI system. the fuel pump relay won't come on if the radio suppression relay (under the hood) is not working. it also won't come on if the ECU doesn't detect the engine is turning over.
absolutely NEVER EVER TRY PLUGGING RANDOM RELAYS INTO RANDOM PLACES. you can fry stuff doing that. you need to A) verify the replacement relay has the same pinout and capacity as the original, and B) do some testing with a voltmeter before even assuming the relay is bad and trying to replace it.
this fuel pump relay, pin 1 should have power always, and pin 2 should have power when the ignition is switched on (this power comes in via the radio supression relay that I mentioned previously).. pin 4 is grounded by the ECU when it senses the engine is turning over via pulsed from the crank position sensor (which pass through the ICU first). only if all those conditions are true would the fuel pump relay provide power on pin 3, which goes to the fuel pump and fuse 11.

ah hAH! Volvo Relays says that relay is a direct replacement for the blue fuel pump relay thats NLA.
