Default "non-adjustable" 940SE ignition timing

Is this true? This is what it said in that jewel of a service manual from Chilton. I measured mine to day at idle, i guess 700rpm or so with vaccum connected it measured about 8 degrees before tdc. Heard somewhere that 12btdc is what's required at stage 0 but if it's non adjustable... BTW I hate those service manuals that try to cover 25 different cars in one book, mostly useless.

I agree. I don't understand why anyone today with an access to a computer looks at crappy car books... If you just Google VOLVO 940 TIMING I am sure you will get 20+ pages of info in .24 seconds...

Ah well, spoken like a person who born with a computer in their hands, which I wasn't. Volvo "Greenbooks" are still very sought after in the VV community though they hardly fall under the description of "crappy", as you put it.

the ignition timing is indeed completely under the control of the EZ116K control unit, which uses the crank position sensor, engine temperature, signals from the LH2.4 ECU, and other such inputs to decide how to time the ignition. if it detects knocking, it retards.

I think 'crappy' was a reference to chilton.

there's another thread here that references a thread on turbobricks where someone details how you can advance the timing +3 degrees with jumper wires on the EZ116k ignition controller. this will probably require premium grade fuel, caveat emptor, objects in mirror are closer than they appear, etc etc.

Hey that's great info thanks. I run the best gas I can find anyway, even go where they sell it without the alcohol added. Also good to know about the knock sensor, I think they must have been talking about earlier turbo cars.

the LH2.2 cars have their base timing set by the distributor rotation, as LH2.2 uses a hall sensor in the distributor as the timing reference. all advance is done electronically

Yes, "crappy" was intended as a reference to this particular Chilton. I do own many Green Books and many dealership service/parts manuals which provide invaluable info re Volvos.... Pierce got my point.
