I am thinking of replacing my high-mileage 1988 240 GLT manual with a much lower mileage 1986 240 GL automatic. Do you think I am likely to be disappointed by the performance of the GL auto? What do those with experience think of the 240 automatics? Any comments would be welcome. All the best, Eric

 

Automatics on turbo motors are great. It really helps with the turbo lag as there are less gears and shifting is quicker. If you are going non-turbo, the automatics are sluggier, esp. off the line. I prefer autos, just because I am lazy and not in a hurry.

I've had em both, and preferred the stick over the auto for the fun of driving. As family grew, changed to the auto, and then traded up to a 740 SW auto. Haven't been really dissapointed , but a lot less fun!

Just get a good running Volvo and you'll be happy with either stick or auto.
