1986 240 Wagon

Overdrive OFF indicator light came on and won't shut off

Could it be that the wires to the switch on the shifter have worn to the breaking point after 23 years of bending with every shift?

Can I just cut the wires and put a toggle switch on the dash?

Is it an automatic transmission? Does the overdrive work? Have you checked the fuse?
