Default Overdrive problem

Lately my Volvo has been showing the orange overdrive arrow on the dashboard and sometimes it will not go off even after pressing the switch on the shifter **** several times. Sometimes it goes off by itself after driving for a while and sometimes I press it again after waiting a while and it goes off. It is a problem specially when it happens on the highway. Where do you think that I should start with the troubleshooting.

First thing to check is the overdrive relay. Most likely the solder joints have cracked making its operation intermittent. You can either re-flow the solder the relay or buy a new one. Do a search here on the forum for overdrive relay and you should find many hits on this as it is a common problem.

If the relay is not the issue, check the wire running to the transmission from the gear shifter. Sometimes they get frayed and short out. Last thing to check is the actual solenoid on the transmission.

Good luck
