Potential purchase, 740 wagon, comments welcome
Here are the photos of it:
car for sale - Album on Imgur
Ad states mechanically good, cosmetically fair. It's a 1992.
The interior looks abused but I figure it could be tidied up.
The paint is faded.
It's $1600
In the engine photo, should there be a cover over the timing belt?
Anything else?
How difficult are the wheel center caps to find? Is the price too high?
Thanks - David

Yes there should be a cover over the timing belt over the timing belt.
Looks a bit ratty for $1600, missing parts, interiors a mess with HUGE holes in the door panels, tailgates from another car... What are the miles?
I wouldn't give them anymore than $700

Looks pretty rough! The tailgate is white! Why was it replaced? Rust? The interior is trashed! And to fix that it will be a lot. Sure, Tbelt cover is missing, who knows what else. Those wheel caps are the last thing you should worry about. Nowhere near $1,600 worth!
that interior is *TRASHED* ... eeeew. the tailgate is the wrong color. hood is repainted, doesn't match, and doesn't line up right. headlights are badly yellowed. the overflow tank is brown. there's all kinda wrong there.
thats a $1000 car as-is, IF its mechanically reliable, and I'm not so sure....

I was planning to look at the car this morning but I got a voicemail so now I may not be able to. As for the paint, this is Arizona and paint like that is common here. Red seems to fade worse than other colors. It looks like he washed the car to make it look shinier. The rear hatch, he said he was hit in the rear which dented the hatch and broke the glass so he installed a replacement from a junkyard. It's silver not white. The big holes in the doors are where the speakers were. I was really looking for a 740 or 940 sedan but they are very hard to come by where I live. These cars get super reviews on Edmunds.com but I'm aware that condition is everything and this one is ratty.
something is fubar with the driver side window controls or door handle.
the missing door speaker grills are part of what holds the door panels in place.
there's wires hanging out all over under that dashboard.
the shifter lever appears to be missing the safety lock button
the instrument panel appears to be missing the bezel.
you're going to need to find at least 2 new front seats, and probably wagon rears, too as if the fronts look that bad, the rears are likely just as bad. good news is, all 740/760/940/960 seats are interchangable, with at most swapping trim and seat belt hardware, and possibly wiring connectors (different years used different connectors for power seats and/or seat heaters). I put some late 960 seats in my 92 740...

That alone would make me walk away, you can fix neglect and age, but bad custom wiring jobs are nearly impossible to fix.
At best I'd buy this car for $500 for parts, then prep it for a demolition derby. The interiors already halfway there!

Lemons has a pretty loose rulebook, as long as you left the car looking beat up you could enter. Though they say 240s tend to be better at Lemons.
