Hey Im fairly new in these forums, I juss aquired a hand me down from my parents, lol...a 86 Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler, and it has 247k miles on it. Awhile back the turbo died...so my dad took the turbo off the manifold and put a cover on it. The car is still running great, not too sluggish but I can hear air escaping. So my question is this....do you guys reccommend me to get another stock turbo or can I go abit bigger without damaging the engine. These engines might be solid rock lol but at 247k miles, add a bigger turbo and it might just blow. Also...I saw a video on streetfire.net(link provided under post) of a 740 with a DOHC head on the engine and it was also 5spd......I was wonderin is there anywhere here to find those parts and around how much do you think it would be? Also....is the tranny swap worth it?

Tranny swap is worth it if you have a donor car (need more bits than just the transmission) and can do the work yourself. I'm a big believer in original equipment so changing the turbo to something larger would get a predjudicial response from me. I took the turbo off my '83 VW Quantum years ago (when I was told that it had failed) and the performance was dismal: 1.6 liter diesel with auto, a/c, and p.s. - - had to make an appointment to get on the freeway.

 

Lol thats gotta suck but yea I know what you mean...the car while it had the turbo will functioning was pretty decent but I dunno I like to have abit more power stored lol.....I guess you can say I have a lead foot...lol...Im pretty sure I was one of the things that caused the downfall of the previous turbo..
