Default Rear Main Seal- Elring?

I ordered this part from FCP

Volvo 240 Crankshaft Seal- Engine Parts- Volvo Parts

I've heard the bad reviews about the Elring Rear main seal since I bought the product. Funny thing is, I opened the box the seal came in and the seal was BROWN? I always thought it would be red/orange.

After the trouble of getting the seal out, I didn't want to do it again for a LONG time. I then proceeded to call the dealerships in our area and found one that stocks the rear main seal. Surprisingly, it looks like the exact same Elring seal I received from FCP. Just 35 more dollars.

Is Elring making the RMS for Volvo these days?

sadly, the quality of 'blue box' parts for older volvos has been on the decline. its like they just don't care any more about what they sold 20+ years ago... but I think some dealers stock cheaper parts... did this come in real volvo packaging with the skinny volvo part number label ?

I like to order my Volvo parts from www.tascaparts.com as they have about a 30% discount over MSRP.

Looks like that would have been a good deal. This part came in a clear plastic bag with a "volvo" sticker on it. I don't see a brand on the tascaparts RMS, how is one to know what he/she is getting from them? It would be hilarious if I got one and it turns out to be another brown elring. lol

well, everything I've ever gotten from Tasca is Volvo bagged or boxed.

The bad does say "original equipment" on one of the stickers. Don't know if that means anything.

means they are volvo 'factory' parts. whatever that means this week. Volvo really makes very little themselves, mostly the body, interior, and engine. the transmissions are Aisin-Warner (Toyota), the electricals are mostly Bosch, the lighting components mostly Cibie. many climate controls systems are GM based. etc etc.

Well, turns out the two seals were different after all. The Volvo seal was much more rigid, had more "guts". The Elring was a lot easier to install though.
