Default Removing original radio 240DL

Hello all,

I have a fancy original radio in my wagon that only plays one station. That would be ok except I don't like that station. It's an AM-FM with cassette and a little equalizer built in. Quite the thing.

Any precautions I should take when removing it? I plan to save it but want to install a modern head unit that actually works. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Mounted high (above ac vents) or down low in the console (in front of the shifter)?

Either place is easy to work with. A source such as crutchfield.com has suggestions and mounting kits/harness adapters.

My radio is above the AC vents. Been quite a while since I've fooled with car stereos and in fact the last few times I used a stereo installation shop to do the job. Money well spent. I thought maybe with the age of the car it might be better to do it myself as the installers could damage something if they're not familiar with older vehicles.
I'll check out Crutchfield, thanks for the suggestion. Probably where I'll buy my stereo anyway.

Some of the upper mount radios have a rear mount that requires removing the glove box to get to -

I've got 3 240's, and I've used the same installer for all three. I used them based on my mechanic's recommendation (his 245 is stunning, with an incredibly elaborate stereo system they custom made for him). I felt comfortable they would do a great job, understand the age and condition of the plastics, the hidden amp located lower in the dash, etc. They have done me right each time, including replacing all speakers with nice Hertz brand that clear the power windows (and in all cases modifying the original speaker grills to keep the original appearance). I believe Crutchfield has the mounting face plate and other hardware you'll need. It has been many a year since I installed a car stereo (although I did it many times back in the day), I wanted the pro's to do it for my current fleet of 240's, and they did it right. Good luck.
