Default Shifter boot replacement

I need to replace the boot on the stick shift on my 1984 245 manual transmission. How do I get the boot on? Can I remove the reverse lock out mechanism and go over the top? If so, how do I remove it?

You mean remove the shift ****? You pulls straight out, it takes some force! Watch out for the O/D switch, wires, disconnect them carefully!

I will remove the shift **** and be careful when removing the OD switch, however below the shift **** there is a ring around the shift stick that moves up to allow the shift stick to go into reverse. Does the reverse lock out ring need to be removed to install a boot? If so, how? Will a boot fit over the ring?

What kind of boot are you using? The leather ones have a zipper, the rubber ones don't but may be you can stretch it enough to pass over the reverse lock out.

I have ordered a rubber one (did not know there was a leather option). I will try to stretch it over the reverse lock out ring. Perhaps it will work with the help of some lubricant and a something to pry with—a bit like mounting a tire. Thanks for the advice.
