smells like its running rich
my 88 240 dl smells like its running rich but I am not getting an engine light seems to be going through 2 more gallons of gas per week I usually go though 6.5 gallons and its topping off at 8 gallons running 87 octane any suggestions on either something to clean out or
Rich running conditions can be caused by various different things:
1. A failed or disconnected AMM will cause the computer to go into limp mode or open loop mode as will a failed or disconnected O2 sensor. The LH 2.2 fuel injection system doesn't have the diagnostics box to read codes so it's hard to determine whether this is the case
2. A faulty engine temperature sensor can cause the ECU to believe the engine is cold all the time and enrich the fuel mixture. This can be diagnosed by testing the sensor.
3. Exhaust leaks up-stream of the O2 sensor can suck in fresh air into the exhaust stream which is sensed by the O2 sensor which the ECU reads a lean condition causing it to enrich the fuel mixture.
If you have had a dramatic jump in your fuel consumption, I would suspect the first cause as the other failures would be more gradual

Check the air intake tube that runs from the AMM to the throttle body for any cracks. Include in that any hoses that connect to it. Since the AMM measures the air going into the throttle body, any leaks in this tube is unmetered and therefore will mess with the mixture the ECU is trying to achieve. This can be the cause of the hunting. Also, check your idle air controller. It is what controls the amount of air provided to the intake when at idle. It may need cleaning.
the idle air controller on a LH car is under the intake manfold, one side connects to the throttle body, the other side to a fitting just after the throttle, and it has an electrical connector that modulates it.
