Speedo Cluster Dead - '89 240
89 240 DL Wagon...
My dash lights weren't working, so I pulled out the speedo cluster to figure it out. After cleaning all the connections on the back of the unit, the lights are working.
Unfortunately, none of the gauges now work. I pulled it back out, inspected it, and made sure everything is connected correctly.
So... What the heck? Any ideas what I managed to screw up?

Got it. Basically, I'm a maroon.
I pretty thoroughly dismantled the speedo/gauge cluster in order to clean the clear plastic & look other things over.
Somehow I managed to drop the little "doo-hickey" that connects the two top screws in the back of the speedo unit itself. I'm not sure what that thing is called, but it's obviously a lot more important than its size would indicate!

The 740's have something similar, but smaller; costs about 8 bucks at the dealer. I learned, the hard way, that you can get away with pulling a cluster on a 240 without disconnecting the battery (even though the book says you should) but not on a 740. The reason is that on the 240 all the circuitry is on the inside and is more protected. Volvo's idea of an improvement was to put the 740 circuit board on the outside of the cluster, where it is more accessible, but a lot more vulnerable..
On another positive note, I hit up our two local U-Pull-It Salvage Yards this morning, where old Volvos are few and far between.
SCORE! I found an '88 240 that has lots of little stuff I can use on my '89 240 Wagon. Weird little stuff like the under-dash pads, etc - which is the stuff you never seem to find.
I'll be heading back out there on Monday to continue the harvest.
