Strange 740 Turbo Behavior

RE: Strange 740 Turbo Behavior
This quote from http://www.swedishbricks.net/700900FAQ/ made me think this:
Sounds awfully similar to my situation... thought i'd try replacing the relay
Symptoms of Bad Pump Relay. [Symptoms:] 89 740 died & started 10 min. later. My '89 740 did the EXACT same thing for a while. When it acted up it did have spark. It seemed to be related to getting hot. It would die in motion, or when hot, it would also refuse to restart 'til it rested for 10 min. As far as driving it, not much you can do, just be prepared to pull over and give it a rest for 10 min. When it acts up, as the key is turned "ON", listen, the fuel pump should normally be heard to come on for about 1.5 sec. If it's not coming on, I'd bet on the relay. [Diagnosis:] After replacing the fuel pump relay ($38 at dealer), it's been 100% fine. [Editor's Note: See the note on "Headlamp Circuits/Relay Won't Function" in the Electrical: Lighting section for more relay information.]

RE: Strange 740 Turbo Behavior
I have a 1990 4-cyl 740 with 130k miles. The car runs perfectly and never stalls. BUT...I am having the same ?electrical problems mentioned at the beginning of these posts. Every couple of weeks the car will start and even drive fine. But it sort of makes a low DB screeching noise, there is no power to the power windows or the turn signals, and the dashborad lights are different. If I turn the car off and start it again a couple of times it will start up normally with full power and again run fine. I thought this was Volvo's way of telling me to replace the airbag but this does not seem the case from the little that I have read Any ideas???

RE: Strange 740 Turbo Behavior
In my 90 740 I've found that when there is no power to any of the accessories (radio, horn etc..) that if I wiggle the ignition cylinder a bit, everything powers up. I know my Ignition switch is going out so that's why the wiggle works. Maybe try that before the car stalls to see if things power up, just don't turn the car off or try to start it again once it's running!
