Default Strange, or normal.

Lately I have been working (when time allows) with my grandson on the 1990 240 DL he picked up as his first car. This thing was sitting for about two years before he got it and would not run. We finally got it running by replacing both fuel pumps, filters, injectors, full tune up, etc......it runs, but runs rather crappy and seemingly rich. Yesterday we worked on it a bit, tested spark with a spark plug light (all 4 good) and the injectors with a noid light, again, all 4 good. The weird thing was that when I went to disable the fuel pumps for the tests, pulling both fuel pump fuses had no effect, the pumps would run and the car stated! I had to pull the 25 Amp blade fuse in the engine bay to disable the pumps, but of course that also killed everything else. Is that normal or has someone done some creative wiring?
