I assume it's a 240? I would also assume it takes DEXRON of some sort and not MERCON. By the year, probably DEXRON III. Wait for someone with more knowledge to come on though.

Standard trans= manual transmission.
The correct oil will be in the Owner's handbook, but I've always had good success with a multi grade engine oil. I had a stubborn gearbox that was supposed to run straight 40w engine oil. Changed to a 15w50 synthetic (for longer change intervals) and the shift became amazing.

Regards, Andrew.

Default Transmission fluid

Your 93 240 5 speed manual transmission is known as the M47. I believe your owners manual will say that it takes ATF Type F or G;my Bentley manual says that .It may also state that for "high mileage and severe duty use" that you can use a Volvo product known as Synchro Oil. My local dealers don't carry it any more. I couldn't find Type G fluid , but the type F is available but not common. With your tranny, you probably have some worn syncros, especially 1st and second. Different things have been posted on here and other sites regarding improved synchro function using synthetic oils for these elderly, worn boxes. Just don't mix Dexron and type f; they are not compatible with each other. I am currently using a mix of type F and Lucas Transmission fixer in my M46w/ O/D and it has helped my worn synchros a lot. Search other posts for the proper way to drain and refill your box.
