Default Timing belt broken 90' 740 turbo wagon

My timing belt broke while driving on the freeway. I can't figure out if I have a problem with the the engine. Interference or non interference. And I need to get the crankshaft pulley of but don't have the specialty tool. Any information about this will help.

Non interference.
Use the Rope Trick to get the pulley off. Take a plug out, stuff a piece of sturdy non falling apart piece of rope in the hole, take the pulley nut off. When the piston goes up, the rope will block its movement and provide resistance to get the nut off. It works well!

Interesting as I have never had a timing belt break on any of my volvo's or ferrari's. How many miles on the belt.

books say 60,000

they have Kevlar belts, but still have a recommended change time around 60,000. Though you can probably go longer.

The service records from the PO of my '92 940 show that the timing belt was last replaced 9 years and 120,000 miles ago....guess it's due for a change.

OK I guess we found the break point. I do the Volvo every 50K miles and the Ferrari every 3 years which is about 10K miles but the age is the issue.

Lots of things determining when a belt breaks. I've seen belts go forever, 200k +, others breaking before their time! Excessive heat, chemical contamination (oil), quality of belt, type of use (short trips vs. long drives), etc.

Sure is nice when breaking the belt doesn't ruin the motor!

Yep you break a belt on an old 3.0L Ferrari V8 and it cost about $10-$15K for the repair. Belt change every 3 years was $200 for parts and about 6 hrs labor. If you have it done it's around $1000.
