Default Timing belt replacement

I've read a few posts about timing belt replacement that mention a special tool, which, I think, is supposed to immobilize the the crank shaft while removing the pulley. Is this necessary if you have an air impact wrench?

Also, I've seen mention of replacing the camshaft and crankshaft seals while doing this repair. Are the old seals difficult to remove?

Thanks for your help!

Bob

Oops! Guess I should have mentioned that it's a 1989 240 DL Automatic.
