Tranny Oil Dripping
Hello 240,740,940 enthusiasts. I'm making great progress with the advice I'm getting here. I topped off the tranny oil and now have a big drip going. Is this overflow from it now being too full? Or does this indicate a breach in a gasket or seal? Is it a really bad idea to drive it with the tranny fluid registering mid-high on the 'max' slot of the cold side of the dip stick? Is there a way to drain SOME of the fluid off?
What is the difference between 240,740 and 940?
Thank you all sooo much!

where is this fluid leak coming from?
you're measuring the transmission fluid when the engine is running at idle, right? ideally, drive it 20 minutes or so to thoroughly warm up the transmission, then park in a level spot without stopping the engine, and check the tranny stick then. cold readings are very unreliable.
if it is overfilled, the best way to remove the excess would be with an oil suction device, putting a hose down the dip stick.

oh, model differences. the 240 came first, and was a facelift plus front suspension redesign on the previous 140 family, also introduced standard fuel injection while most 140's had carbs.. the 740 was a completely new chassis design, using essentially the same engine, transmissions, and rear axle, but with a lot of little enhancements to the suspension, road isolation, body stiffness, etc. the 940 was a minor facelift to the 740, and in fact, 1991/1992 740/940 wagons are virtually identical except the seats. the 940 sedans had a taller trunk and more rounded rear end, while the 740 sedan's rear end was square as can be.
each of these lines underwent regular incremental improvements and engineering changes over the years, for instance, early 240's were k-jetronic mechanical fuel injection, later ones were LH II, then LH 2.2, and the 1989-1993 models were LH 2.4. 240's underwent a couple rounds of minor face lift, early ones having single round headlights and 'flat hoods', while later ones had dual rectangular, then the 86-93 had the single big TV panel headlights (I'm speaking of US models here, Europe/World cars had completely different lighting).
