Default Transmission swap?

Will an M47 bolt up to a 82 b21ft? I noticed that most of the higher torque cars have the m46. Is there a reason for this?

I believe they are easily swappable, driveshaft will have to be changed... You have the M46 now, right? And yes, the 46 is heavier duty, and geared to take the turbo's torque under optimum performance.

ok well then I'll just stick with that. Does the electronic overdrive work in all gears or just 4th?

any way to override that? is the overdrive unit in the trans or mounted after it?

It is mounted on the rear of the gear box.

Basically overdriveadds a 5th gear to a 4 speed box. Why would you want to override it?

Not override it to not use it. I want to use it while its in any gear so that it would kind of be an 8 speed. Since it is mounted on the end it should just go off the output shaft of the transmission. I'm guessing there is a sensor that tells it the transmission is in 4th. If i can trick it to make it think that all the time i could use it in any gear. Then i could go into first, then turn on overdrive, then second w/o OD, then OD, then third and so on and so on. I don't know if anyone has thought of this on here before but i thought it would be cool. I don't know if it would mess with the speedo but i'm not really worried about that.

I like your thinking but I seriously doubt it would work like that...

I always get confused when adding up gear ratios, but wouldn’t—for example—second gear with the overdrive on be as close to third gear as to make no difference?

if my math is right the gears would go as such
1st - 4.03
1st w/ OD - 3.22
2nd - 2.16
2nd w/ OD - 1.73
3rd - 1.37
3rd w/ OD - 1.1
4th - 1
4th w/ OD - .8

So really it would not make that much of a difference. And depending on how the OD unit works, shifting in and out of it that much with so many variances of torque output through the gears would probably blow it up.

You are right about that. You can have "too many gears". After a certain point, what's the point? I personally haven't really enjoyed 6 speed cars-I love sticks by the way, but I think that 5 gears is all you need, it always feels natural to me where the 6th is just too much and I have to think about it. May be it's a habit. A six speedis really more for economy than anything else and it doesimprove it butI think that'sit as far as manuals are going to go with the gears. With autos it's different, they are about "smoothness", and with more gears there's less jerkiness but the driver is not doing the shifting so it's ok.

As far as ourancient Volvos, the M46 overdrive is like a box attached at the end of the trans, almost as an afterthought (which it was), so it's not possible to dothe suggested modeven if desired, as a curiosityfor example, like, wow, "I got a ten speed Volvo!"

and thats really all i'm looking for. I'm not going to use it on a regular basis but it would be cool to show to a friend once in a while. I'll look into when i actually get my hands on the car.
