Default Turbo questions

Hey all. My '91 740 has been burning oil for a while now and I may have found a solution. One of the other students in my college class has some Mitsubishi turbos from some past Mitsubishi cars and thinks that one might fit my car. Other than looking at the numbers on the data plate, what else do I have to look for to make sure it's compatible? And what are the specs (if possible) when comparing the two?

IIRC, the later 740s and the 940s use a Mitsu TD05, but Im not sure all TD05 have the same mounting flanges.

Hmmm, will really have to look at that. I'll try to keep you posted on what he brings. May have pictures as well just to see.

Ok, looking at my turbo and the three that he brought the only interchangeable part is the mid section of the turbo. So what he and I are doing is rebuilding the turbos that he has so that it is practice for when I work on my turbo. The way that is looking now I just might rebuild mine by replacing the seals and bearings. Does anyone have a source for a rebuild kit that is not on ebay (I don' t trust ebay)? If it's needed, I'll post the part number and any other number on the turbo that is required for a proper fit of the parts.

How do you know your burning oil? Blue smoke? Is there any leaks?

There is blue smoke at times and the turbo does leak oil.

Ok, now I am thoroughly confused. Thought my car had a Mitsu turbo, but now it seems that it is a Garrett. The part number that I got off the turbo is 3517646. Everything that I am looking at so far says it's a Garrett now. Which one is it?

Disregard the last one. I found a rebuild kit online from mid west turbos and will order it.
