Volvo 240 Popping Out of Gear
I have a 1980 Volvo 242 and this morning when I drove to work (and again on the way home!) I noticed that both bottom gears (2 and 4) were popping out. When I would shift into 2 and 4, it felt like it wasn't going in all the way and as soon as I would put the clutch into shift again it would slip into neutral. When cruising along in 4th it would also semi-frequently slip out. I ended up just resting my hand on the shifter and it stayed in that way.
I also noticed that when I am accelerating there is a groaning noise (sounds almost exactly like the crunch you get from driving over fresh snow), goes away as soon as I stop accelerating. Its also hardly noticeable while driving slowly.
Any ideas as to what could be going on? I find it hard to believe that both synchros just happened to stop working on the same day! I saw somewhere that maybe it could be the transmission mounts? Or even something as simple as ice build up? Thanks for your help!
By the way, the clutch was replaced at the end of December.
