Volvo 740 M46 Shifting Issues
You can get much better info on line these days than Haynes; not to even mention a Chilton that has become a bad joke! Volvo owners are fortunate--lots of info out there on forums and just Googling a topic brings great results.
Got the part off yesterday and fitted the new one on. Just waiting for the new screws to come in as well as the transmission mount.
Quick question regarding the mount; how do I get that thing off? I see the one screw and nut facing upwards that's going to be a serious pain to get off because I can't use my air gun for it. Do I have to remove the crossmember that it is attached to in order to remove the old mount and install the new one?
Also, on a side note, I believe my oil pan gasket is bad and needs replacing. Can I take off all of the screws and pull the pan downwards without removing the front suspension/axle and still have enough clearance to slide it out/in or do I have to remove all of that?
Thanks for the help guys, wouldn't have been able to make it this far without you!

Are you asking about the M46 pan gasket? Not sure what you mean about axle?
if its the engine oil pan, the anti-sway bar, the front cross-brace, and steering rack are rather in the way. I've never had to drop an oil pan so I dunno if its doable or not.
As far as the engine tranny mount goes, just unscrew that crossmember with the tranny on a jack and replace?
Okay guys,
Update - I put the new flex disc/guibo on today and was feeling pretty good about it until I moved my car. I put the car in reverse and I heard a "buh-dum, buh-dum, buh dum" as I moved backwards both in and out of gear, and the shifter was moving and vibrating along with the sound. I could feel something bumping as the car moved (both forwards and backwards) in the center tunnel near the engine/transmission area.
It does this no matter if it is in or out of gear while the car is in motion, and I cannot figure it out for the life of me what is causing it.
I have the new trans mount being shipped as I know mine is bad.
I took the entire shifter boot apart and put it back together hoping that just maybe something was hitting down below but it didn't fix anything.
This same thing happened before I fixed the flex disc/guibo mount as well. The last time that I actually drove it (first post) it was fine, I just had the shifting problems into 2nd and 4th. I do notice that 2nd and 4th gear hit the plastic part of the removable tray in the center with the boot on (if that provides any help to diagnose the issue).
I'm just stumped and very frustrated at this point with this issue.
Again, I appreciate all of your help and assistance with this issue.

jack up the car, put it on stands, crawl under it and see if you can move the driveshaft up/down any at the center bearing... with the tranmission in gear, spin one back wheel back and forth while the other is locked (leave one side on the ground), and see how much play is in the U joints.
I jacked up the rear with the rear wheels in the air and rotated the driveshaft. it made that noise again while moving the transmission up and down. I jacked up the tranny a bit since my mount is totally shot and tried to rotate the driveshaft and it was fine. It looks like the transmission and driveshaft are meeting at a slight angle since the mount is so bad and flat, causing it to flex the guibo/disc while rotating and result in that noise.
After I figured it all out, I go to put up the windows and they don't work. I had the boot off my shifter and it worked when I first test drove it, and now they're not working. Just spent the last hour trying to figure out where the problem was for the windows in the wiring by the shift **** to no avail. This is just the icing on the cake here... lol. I'm so frustrated and it's about to rain.
EDIT: Are there any wires/connections near the gearshift **** other than the heated seats, OD, and pair going underneath the car that would cause the windows to just stop working? I checked the relay and the connections for it and they look perfect.

Holy crap. So I took out the fuse panel to inspect each and every wire underneath after I checked the window fuse (which was good). I figured I'd check every fuse just in case and sure enough there was a blown one (no 9) which was the window relay fuse (which I must've glossed over the first time). Windows work now. Totally stupid and avoidable headache.
Now I just have to wait for my transmission mount to arrive before I can install that. Would that explain why my shifter hits the plastic center cover in 2nd and 4th gear?

Just put on the new transmission mount. It was literally broken in half and disconnected from the metal plate that secures it to the transmission, hence the movement. It had not been replaced in a very, very long time. After putting the new one on and going for a test drive, it feels like a new car, (that paired with the new spark plugs that the kid whom I bought it from lied to me about replacing) and I have no more issues with shifting or crazy vibrations.
I appreciate all of the help from you guys with getting this issue fixed.
