Default What is this hose for?

Does anyone know what this hose is for? It's a metallic type of hose and it was really frayed and didn't even attach very well so I had to cut part of it off and now it doesn't attach at all because it is too short. It is located right behind the water pump. It's just laying there while the 240 is running.

I have attached an image to show you

It's the preheat hose that runs to the air filter box. A lot of people remove it so the hot air won't damage the air mass meter if the "flapper" inside the airbox gets stuck open, but you could fail a visual emissions test by having it removed.

yeah, thats really only needed in places that get ungodly cold

basically, there's a mechanical thermostat flap in the bottom of the airbox, if its really cold out, it opens, and sucks air in from that hose instead of from the normal plastic duct behind the headlight. the other end of that hose goes to a heat exchanger on the exhaust headers so it can suck in air thats preheated by said headers.

i just had the airbox out of my 850 turbo yesterday, and note that they don't even use any such thing anymore. traditionally, I've used a bit of bailing wire to tie those air flappers closed as here on the mid-left coast, 'cold' is upper 40s, 'hot' is mid 80s, most of the year its 50s-70s.

That is the least of your troubles, and it has nothing to do with emissions. You should take care of the oil and coolant leaks I see there.

True, but the smog patrol don't know that. A missing hose from the exhaust area is a red flag to them! Unless you live in Ohio, where no one cares what kind of smoke comes out your pipe .

yeah, the leaking oil sucks, but it really hasn't effected me yet. I really don't see any smoke coming out of my pipe. I have never really looked or noticed. I know for sure it's nothing extreme.

its hard to tell where the oil is coming from in that picture, but the water pump looks like its covered in old coolant, and its getting all over the alternator, which will eventually kill it.

This may be obvious, but clean all that stuff up and keep an eye on it. It may just be wet road dirt that looks like a leak. Are you loosing oil or coolant?
