An adjustable spanner shouldn't really harm the drain plug, but don't use one if you weren't the last person to change the oil. Every car I've ever bought has had the drain plug on tighter than something really tight. Gas station service centers always do that for some reason. I had to use a breaker bar on the drain plug of my car when I bought it, and being as my breaker bar was a bicycle-seat-post slipped over the end of my socket wrench, it just bent the wrench. It's a cheap wrench, but still.
