Default White smoke and water after gasket job

1979 Volvo 242 DL 4 speed M46

Old cylinder head was beyond repair and had coolant in oil.

replaced with a good one...same family 2.1L no more coolant in oil
but I have white smoke and water out the tail pipe...runs fine...

New
valve oil seals on intake
valve hushers
valve cover gasket
intake gasket
injector seal kit
throttle body gasket
exhaust gaskets
cam seal
cylinder head gasket
Re-used old cylinder head bolts maybe my problem...torque to spec new type bolts and not the old type.
by passed heater hose

tune up
clutch kit
front and rear seals...all of them....I mean all...
new engine wire harness
oil temp sensor
new battery
motor/trans mounts
ujoints
diff fluid
new radiator
Valvoline high mileage coolant...what the hell is going on....?

WHITE SMOKE WHILE IDLE....WITH WATER DROPPLETS...CONDENSATION?
AFTER EXHAUST MANIFOLD I DO HAVE A FEW CRACKS IN ENTIRE EXHAUST SYSTEM...

RE DID MY HEAD GASKET AND NOW I GET A HISSING FROM BACK OF CYL HEAD INTAKE SIDE...I TOOK HEADS OFF AND HAD COOLANT DROPLETS ALL OVER THE PISTONS...SOME LIQUID BECAUSE WHEN YOU TAKE OFF THE CYL HEAD IT DRIPS ON IT...BUT THIS TIME IT HAD A SMALL SECTION OF THE GASKET GONE....SO I REPLACED IT YESTERDAY AND RAN GOOD WITH NO SMOKE AND WATER FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR THEN SMALL WATER PARTICLES STARTED TO COME OUT...NO SMOKE...MAYBE A TINY BIT...

Did you have the replacement head skimmed and checked for warping before fitting to the block?
New head bolts wise too.

thanks for your reply

I did a manual warp check....you know with the tool placed at each opposite corner then center....
I am restoring it on an extreme budget and would have liked to get the heads surfaced and such....

I think I have narrowed it down to the old head bolts I need to replace and the final QUARTER TURN OF THE BOLTS...HOW CAN YOU BE ACCURATE ON THE QUARTER TURN?...ALL I CAN DO IS EYEBALL THE FREAKING TURN...WITH A LONG BREAKER BAR AND AN IMAGINARY CLOCK....ALL I CAN THINK OF .....I AM MENTALLY FRIED AFTER SO MUCH WORK....ALL THOUGH I FEEL I GAINED A TON OF KNOWLEDGE ON THE CIS SYSTEM...

First, an UNKNOWN head is a question mark--you don't know anything about its history, so I'd run it through a machine shop, at least for an evaluation; I am a cheap SOB but the job has to be done right so even though there is an element of a crap shoot, one should try to eliminate the jokers...

The bolts can be reused several times, at least the most recent ones, I always reuse them... They can also be measured to check for stretching.

Don't sweat the "quarter turn". I mean if it is 90 degs, or 84 degs, that should be immaterial.

As far as the block, what's the history of the motor? Overheating? Prior symptoms?
I'd examine it with a magnifying glass although it could be tricky to find minute cracks, and that is by no means a foolproof method.

indeed, a machine shop that does the shave job also generally pressure tests the head

Yes, I got to take the heads to a shop...

you see, in the past, I've purchased cyl heads for 2.3L engines from the junk yard and usually grabbed the ones were the car was rear ended or side swiped...plenty of them....always...I would rather see them on the road but that's no the case......THIS TIME I FOUND MYSELF LOOKING FOR A 2.1L AND THEY ARE SCARCE ....THE OLDER VOLVO'S ARE PILLAGED BY EMPLOYEES BEFORE WE GET A SHOT AT THEM...OR THEY ARE COMPLETELY GONE MECHANICALLY....SO AFTER 2 MONTHS OF SEARCHING AN 83 WAGON SHOWED UP AT THE JUNK YARD AND NO OTHER CHOICES....WELL...NO WARPING OR PITTING, MATTING SURFACE WAS VERY SMOOTH...THE GASKET WAS GOOD...SO I TOOK THE CYL HEAD...

BUT WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT TO A SHOP....AND CROSS MY FINGERS
