Default Why use tranny fluid in replacement power steering pump?

'86 240DL

I'm replacing my power steering pump with a rebuilt - store bought one. The cap on my power steering reservoir says 'only use tranny fluid' and the repair manual says '... then fill the new pump with tranny fluid'. Does it make a difference whether I use common power steering fluid or transmission Dextron 2 fluid?

Appreciatively,
Dagaan

Volvo says to use Type F transmission fluid. Probably doesn't matter much if you use Dextron in a rebuilt pump.

I've been putting dex/merc III in mine, and haven't had any issues.

Depends on the pump's specific specs at this point. I've been using automatic transmission fluid type F for the past 7 years I've had my 240. Did a PS system flush last month, and replenished with ATF type F with no issues whatsoever.

I'm assuming the 2 types you mention aren't compatible. If the pump doesn't specify, go with whatever the manual says to use and stick to it.

I'm going with the recommendation; Dextron - the fluids all cost about the same. Question: the manual says 'bleed the system before putting in new fluid - and then again after filling the reservoir with a new pump installed.' Is the bleeder either of the fluid hoses that connect to the gear box? You loosen the bolt that clamps the metal end that a bolt passes thru to let out air? Thanx

I'm going for the Dex/Merc - for whatever reason - volvo recommends it and the different fluids all cost the same anyway. Thanks!

I usually don't disconnect any hoses to bleed the air out of the system. I set the wheels straight and overfill the pump. Start the car and slowly turn wheel to full right. Check pump fill as necessary. Then turn wheel all the way to the left. Fill to cold fill line. Drive car to warm up oil and recheck hot. Add as required.

Yep. Anything works. Red ATF, or clear PS fluid from the store. Just pick one, pour it in, and go. That simple.
