So hey there, I bought a 94 960 sedan with the auto trans and it’s got a code alarm elite dm 1500 installed…something is not working because the car won’t crank or start. I’ve tried locking unlocking the door I’ve tried the deactivation switch nothing….how do I get this car to crank and start or repair the existing system

Is that an aftermarket system? If so disconnect the f-ing thing - and splice the damaged wires back where they should be.

 

I did that and she still won’t crank over, I’m new to the Volvo so I’m having a hard time finding the next pieces to look at, (starter, starter solenoid, starter relay) dashboard and everything comes up electronics work. But no crank like the immobilzer is still on or something

 

Here's the starter wiring for a 94 960. Simple, no relay, no immobilizer, no fuse. Power goes from the battery to the ignition switch on a red wire, pink wire from the ignition switch to 3/40 the neutral safety switch then a blue/pink wire to the solenoid. Note connector 17/1. It's a blue 2 place wire holder with only one place used with two pink wires. That is where you can connect a manual starter switch under the hood (to be used for instance when checking compression or in this case to test the continuity/integrity of the wiring though the NSS all the way to the starter solenoid.). Note that it is before the Neutral Safety Switch - so if a manual switch is used the starter will not engage if not in park or neutral or the NSS is bad.(or mis-adjusted) Unfortunately the NSS unplugs at connector C128 - under the car on the side of the transmission - and that area/ wiring can be in pretty poor condition after 30 years. Don't know why the picture of the starter below has a bl/green wire shown going to the solenoid other than somebody made a mistake when this book was printed xx years ago.

 

Okay so i nackered around on the car and discovered it’s in fact the neutral saftey switch the only thing now is to clean and adjust it or replace it all together what has been your guy’s experience?

 

I used to own a special tool to adjust the NSS during installation - it always worked with proper adjustment. Might take a couple of tries without that tool - and am wondering what the condition of the wiring harness plug on the left side of the transmission is - The rubber insulators on the wires tend to disintegrate at this point in life. To replace the switch there's something in the way - cooler lines/exhaust maybe? (it's been a long time since I have replaced one) Instead of removing it/them you can just bend them slightly out of the way with a large pry bar from what I remember - it will still be a tight fit to get the switch in and out. It's a difficult area to see the adjustments, and without the alignment tool as I said might take a few tries to get it to work. It's good to see you can still buy a new switch. (but i bet where it plugs in is going to be ugly!)
