Default baffling starter problem

I have an '89 Volvo 760 turbo with intermittent starting problems:

2 scenarios...

1) I turn the key and no response from starter, no clicking, etc.. All other electrical works fine. I found that if I remove the key and wait about 10 minutes then try again, it will start first try.

2) Similar situation as above, except the auxilary fan cycles on and runs for about 3 minutes. This time I have to remove the key and wait about 30 minutes, after which it will start first try.

The problem is becoming more frequent, apx. every 2 dozen cranks or so.

Thanks for your help.

Have you cleaned the battery post? Even if they don't look like they need it...
