Default Coolant Sensor Light

Hello,
I have a 97 960 sedan with a 2.9 engine. The coolant sensor light goes on and off while the coolant level seems to be fine. Any ideas on this one?
Thanks, John

Sounds as if your sensor might be going.... I would replace it, since that's an easy one and see what happens!

The coolant sensor it located under the coolant tank, where you top up the coolant. The tank should slide up off its brackets and there are two wires going in the tank at the bottom. If you tug on it gently the sensor should slide out, its about 3"long.

Hi again,
The fluid level was a little lower than normal. ( just below minimum. ) Would the sensor react to this?

Most likely thats why the low coolant light came on because the coolant level was below the minimun mark. Just keep an eye on your coolant level. It shouldnt need filled up very often unless there is a leak or gasket issues.

Thanks,
Are gasket issues a problem with these? Just wondering if I should keep my eye out for anything in particular.

Its not a major issue with the 960. Things to watch for would be blue smoke, overheating and using up significant amounts of coolant even though there are no coolant leaks.

oh yes and keep an eye on your oil, if you notice its a greyish color thats a sure fire indication theres a gasket problem. This indicates coolant has entered the oil.

My coolant was a hair lower than it should have been and the light came on. I would just add a little bit and see if it goes away.

Default This doesnt end :)

Here is my story....i had my ABS and check engine lights on and took the car to the dealer for diagnostics ( i have a 2000 V70 Non turbo) and $150 later he tells me i need to replace my ABS module and ECT sensor....His quote to do this close to $2K. In any case with the help from this and other forums i get the ABS module replaced for less than 500 and i am happy as can be...But wait the following day my coolant sensor turns on....i check my Coolant level and it is way down....there seems to be some leakage....take it back to the shop and he tells me my water pump is out.......C'mon now...
So i get the timing belt and water pump replaced for another $600 ( it was due i guess at 110K miles) and then i am happy..

But wait...the coolant light still turns on......Now even though the tank is full the light remains on...even though i did not have that problem before....

Any ideas why this could be happening??? Is it the Coolant Level Sensor? How can i test to make sure that is the problem and not some leakage??I did notice that the coolant level drop some ...

Appreciate your help...cant spend any more money
