Followup re: 94 960 trans fault arrow flashes
This is in regard to an earlier thread I started awhile back. Speedometer would quit working and the transmission fault arrow on the dash would flash, along with the transmission mode (Economy or Sport whichever was selected) and the Winter light were alternating flashing. Here is the link to the earlier thread on this board which is the same but more detailed with respect to the symptoms and the process I went through, trying to narrow it down and figure it out.
1994 960 transmission fault arrow flashes
I have an update. I bought a used speedometer off of ebay and had my independent Volvo mechanic install it, after he determined that the electrical runs on the existing speedometer circuit board were compromised and too far gone to be repaired. Problem solved! Speedometer never quits and the lights of course never start flashing again. It had been getting worse, with the speedometer failing more frequently, just about every day, and it got to the point where I could hardly get the speedometer to start working again by beating on top of the dash.
One other thing, I can't remember if I mentioned this. I think I did, but on 4 occasions when the speedometer quit working while I was driving, then in addition to the lights flashing I noticed that the transmission would not lock up the torque converter. I could tell by the tach at highway speed that it was never locking up the torque converter while driving steadily on level ground, all the way up to 70 MPH. If I pulled over and turned off the car and then started it right back up again, that would not clear the flashing lights but it did clear the problem of the torque converter not locking up. That problem has never come back either. I didn't expect it to. All of my symptoms were tied to the speedometer failure.
In researching my original problems I noticed that other people have had similar symptoms where the transmission fault light flashes together with the transmission mode lights. I'm just saying that one cause of this, as it was in my case, can be a faulty speedometer. I did not change the entire cluster, only the speedometer.
