Just got a 960....1996
Someone on here did a head gasket replacement, can't remember who but I think he may have done a write up. Also, most people rig the cams so that they come out and don't move. You can probably learn a lot from the 850 section sticky that talks about the head gasket. These motors are very simular.
If you start a new thread calling it "head gasket replacement 960" you will likely get some experience people pop in within a day or two. The problem is, you work and move so fast that you will be done before most people reboot their computers.
One thing, I believe they warned people against that copper gasket sealer stuff. I could be wrong though. Search and read.

Oh yea, Shelby and Dan are good 960 guys as well.
BTW, I seen foam in my 960 motor a few times and I live in Arkansas. Nothing in the oil drain.

I doubt it. The sad thing is that he pulled the head apart without doing a compression test. It would have been good to know if you needed to do anything to a valve or piston before tearing into it.
just drained the oil......NO WATER...im waiting for it to drain all the way to inspect the pan i drained it into....condensation, showing on the dipstick...REALLY??....wow
now i am glad i waited....lol
now i am glad i waited....lol

im speechless......this makes no sense after seeing the dipstick....but considering the chance that it may have been pulled out a bit....dew forming...ect...either way, its wierd.
thats the oil i drained from the motor....its in need of changing, but NO WATER......blew my mind....no seals on this motor have been breached...thank god....
now i will re-assemble, and get the propper tests done to find the reason for the rough idle and coolant pressure...
as for oil, the last change, they put in 10w30.....should i go thicker, like on a normal high mileage car....i was thinking 10w40...??
and thanks guys, i know im fast with the labor, but im glad u guys were wrong...i didnt have it all apart....now i just need to put back in a million bolts...lol

Synthetic 10W30. Until you discover problems, keep it simple.
just the air pump tubing.....injector plugs, valve cover bolts...(didnt pull it off), coils, cam sensor, little ****......
as for oil, i dont know if they used synthetic before, does that matter?...
and plugs, whats best, ill do those as well.....
ill basically turn this into a tune up.

Plugs: get Volvo Genuine from FCP ($ 25 for a 6-pack).
[QUOTE=Henry10;293594]These engines have no valve covers, per se. The Head has a lower and upper section. Do you take out the bolts for the upper section? Or just the plastic thing that reads "24V"?
ther top head cover bolts are off....but its tight....so i was going to clean the bolts, and re-bolt it....in sequence...

i really need to re-seal it....its like its glued down...nothing moved...seems like it was never meant to be opened.....
you really dont think i can just bolt it back...??..even for now?..
