Default KEy Fob Question

I know this has probably been asked before but can not find it on the forum. I picked up my 1996 volvo 960 wagon back in feb from the son of the 2nd owner with no key fob, just one key. now i know it has the system for the key fob but he couldnt find the key when he was cleaning out his parents estate. How can i find out easily what key fob it is? i have my aunts extra fob for her 95 960 but it wont program to the car....is this a clear indicator that i would need the other or is there a difference between years? Sorry if i got confusing.

@jands:

The remote in question (here) seems to be a match for 1994 to 1997 models; and pairs to a receiver (here) which spans from 1994 to 1997. Therefore, my guess is that a '95 to '96 fob swap wouldn't present a problem if all's present and working properly...

From what I understand, the receiver has adequate memory for only 4 remote control identities; and, after that, the onboard EEPROM needs to be cleared. That could be one reason why the keyfob will not function with the car; and, again from what I understand, would require interfacing with equipment which the dealer only will have.

Anyone else out there have more complete/accurate information to address this problem?

UPDATE:

Now I'M confused.

My own '95 has the 9148645 unit (here) which seems to be specified for the 850 line ONLY. However, the 960s were spec'd for shipment with the 9148647 unit (here)!

The OP scenario still seems to indicate a working match; but this variance causes one to wonder exactly what happened with the '95s

Strange...

yea it makes me wonder as well, and when i search ebay etc for remotes two remotes come up. the one my aunt gave me (lock and unlock side by side) and the other with the lock/panic above the unlock. so if i was to call the dealer would they be able to tell me over the phone what i would need to do or is this gonna get pricey lol

Some later cars had the 9442982 fob, I think the way to tell is to put your eyes on the receiver brain and see if it says Alps (get the ones Cubic_Curiosity is talking about) or Stribel (9442982)

Now there's a fob that looks identical to 9442982 with different legends on the buttons.. it may or may not work.
