Default Malfunctioning temp sensor

I have a 95 volvo 960 with over 104000 miles on it. Over the past month I have noticed that the temp sensor on the dash is not working. Shows totally cold. Then all of a sudden it works for a little bit. Then I notice it has gone dead again. I have spoken to the dealer and they say it's the termostat. If this were true and the thermostat was stuck in the open position you would thing the temp sensor would still at least show warm. Then he says it could be a sensor located on the thermostat housing or at the back of the block. I'm not sure they know what they are talking about. For 100.00 to 150.00 bucks they assure me they can fix the problem. I think for about 50.00 bucks I can buy the part and do the repair myself.

Has anyone else experience this prob with a tempature sensor and if so, what did you find the problem to be.

Sounds like they told you about what I was going to say.To be safe if I were you I would replace the 2 sensors and the thermostat. Most of the time when you fix one the other one goes out shortly after that.

I know where the thermostat is located but as for the sensor(s)....where would those be on a 95 model. I took a quick look at the thermostat housing and didn't see anything there. Is there any documentation that might describe this procedure? I have looked for a service manual and cannot seem to locate one. How many sensors are there?

I think the thermostat is a 187 degree thermostat, would you change this out or use any special anti-freeze, or would you just use stock parts and regular antifreeze....

Thanks in advance for the help.

Just use stock parts. If there isn't one in the thermostat housing. Then you only have one located in the back of the head.It has a plastic plug with 2 wires going to it.If you buy the sensor first then it will make it easier for you to locate on the car.If you need anymore help let me know.

Just got my temp sensor fixed....it was indeed only a thermostat....the temp sensor is located on the housing containing the thermostat. Would have been very easy fix if need to change. Simply changed the thermostat and temp gauge on the dash began to work as normal.....

Thanx for all the help and assistance....
