1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Upgrade ?'s......
I have a 1996 850 Turbo with a dying turbo. I want to upgrade while I'm at it and was curious as to what to use. I have heard of a 16T and was curious what they came on and what is necessary for the install? Possibly a part number? Thanks, Derek

RE: 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Upgrade ?'s......
That is a question most accurately replied by Moderator S70driver or Moderator Tech.
I myself was happy with the stock turbocharger and that's what I would replace with; not necessary to get a tuned ECU, etc...
Whatever you get, I would use full-synthetic oil + MANN (OEM) filter. Let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes in summer, 1-minute in winter to let the turbocharger cool down after freeway driving. Be easy on the gas pedal until the engine has reached normal operating temp; 3 O'clock on the temp gauge, or 10-15 minutes of easy driving.

Volvo TD04-19T Turbocharger upgrade 2.3L - 2.4L - 2.5L
Gents,
Im sure many of you are curious about rebuilding or upgrading your old TD04 turbocharger. Mitsubishi MHI produces excellent turbochargers
that withstand serious abuse with regard to performance applications. However the 2.3>2.5 engines are now racking high miles and in some cases serve 10 years or more of service. Running performance chips on a 100K+ engine will certainly kill the turbo much faster.
We have built a strong following in the Volvo / Saab community and have plenty of experience rebuilding / upgrading the TD04 turbos. Most clients experience the same symptoms, mild smoke between shifts, subtle power loss and worst case noise coming from the turbo.
Over the years we have created a strong following of Volvo / Saab clients looking to rebuild or possibly upgrade their tired leaking TD04. The TD04 comes with several different compressor wheel options but the most desirable is the TD04-19T compressor. This compressor wheel will support 505CFM or 350HP and is the largest wheel in the OEM family.
A typical Scroll Products TD04-19T upgrade comes with the 505CFM (19T) compressor and the following TD04 internal performance components:
-TD04-19T Compressor Upgrade
-TD04 360 Thrust Bearing Upgrade
-TD04 Performance Thrust Kit
-TD04 Step-Gap Piston Ring (hotside)
-TD04 Alloy Journal Bearings
If you are on the fence about rebuilding or upgrading your existing turbocharger and have questions or concerns feel free to PM or call 201-925-0825-Sean. We are located off Rt.46W in Essex County, NJ.

OP. DO NOT upgrade to the 19T, if you're running completely stock, the 19T is NOT the way to go. 16T would be the largest replacement you want before you need a laundry list of supporting modifications.

Yeah, maybe for someone who has a built engine and the other necessary upgrades to run a 19T.

I'll third that. I replaced my worn out 15G with a 16T and am very happy with it. The 16T is capable of producing more boost than you will ever be able to put to the car without massive internal upgrades. The benefit of the 18T or 19T is that you will get boost FASTER. the drawback is that getting that boost faster can bend rods if your motor isnt built for it.

Agreed, extracting the full potential of the TD04-19T would require additional fueling, programming, etc. That being said why go to the bakery and buy half a loaf? Running a 13T, 16T or 19T really makes little difference in the big picture as the wastegate controls boost pressure. Using a larger compressor wheel will not cause any problems, in my eyes its just added headroom for additional tweeks down the road.
Again Im not looking to ruffle feathers, we have built many upgrades all sorts of cold side upgrades for just about any applications and knowone has ever complained with regard to drivability issues from a larger compressor.
Using a larger turbine wheel would cause issues with regard to proper tuning. Upgrading the turbine wheel is not something we perform on that turbo.
Thank you,
Sean
