Default 850 cabin air filter

I am planning to replace the cabin air filter on my 1994 Volvo 850, but can't seem to find any information on where it should be. I have found several topics, but some say it's under the glove box, others say it's under the plastic cover near the windshield. A picture would be awesome, an explanation would be as useful though

Thanks in advance,
Tom

The video is correct. Chances are you are going to need a frame. Unless the evaporator has been replaced on your car then chances are your car doesn't have a filter.

Here is a link to what you will need.

I just checked my cabin filter to see how it is because my interior vents look somewhat dusty. My car doesn't have one. Is it needed ? and can i just put one in. It has been crazy hot around here and i have been running the ac alot lately.

Thanx in Advance

They help to save the evaporator coil and if you have an urban commute they make a charcoal filter that will help to keep the fumes down when you are stuck in traffic. I see "Kits" on eBay from time to time that have both the filter and the frame for around the street price of the frame itself but I don't know how bad the freight is.

I only had to remove one screw and it was done. Easiest job I've ever done to my Volvo :P

I learned that my 850 R did not have a cabin filter so I ordered the frame and charcoal filter iPd. I like the fact that they sold the charcoal filter because it does filter fumes and other odors. I installed one because I suffer from allergies and thought it would help keep my system clean, extend the life of the motor, etc.

It was a easy install but the filter did not fit in the frame. I had to file the filter clip slot in the frame a little before the filter would clip in place. No big deal but it would be better to check the filter/frame fit before you slide it in the car.

hey guys, i have a 1994 volvo 850 turbo and it does not have a cabin air filter as well, the kits work great but i just went to the junk yard, snatched a container or holder from an S70 and put it in, i relocated the i think ambient temp sensor from there or whatever other temp sensor it is, then, put it in the filter holder under the plastic cover by the left side of the windshield and have had no dust or anything come blowing in on gravel roads, easy fix cost me less than 20$ as it had a decently clean filter in there as well. Good luck ebay and fcp and ipd have kits but do whats cheaper and easiest.

Good luck,

Kelsey

I did the same, wrecker, grabbed one from a S60 that had a charcoal filter. Cost me $2.50, snapped right in.

I just installed the charcoal filter and frame in my 94 850 Turbo. Smartest thing I have done to the volvo. I pass a sewage treatment plant on my way to work and now, no more toxic smells.

the S60 model will snap in? are they all a universal fit or would it be better to just find one from a 850?

Older 850's dont have the filter, just a cone where the filter goes. Yes it snapped right in. I later replaced the filter with a new one due to smell. One thing I notice is I dont have the blower fan output I used to have. The filter is a little restrictive. Its a toss up whether I like it or not. I guess I do since I know junk is not being sucked in the system.

Heh, your post brought up an amusing story. I was doing some engine work on a customer's '98 V70, 200,000 miles. She also asked me to check the blower motor, because very little air was getting into the car, and the last place she took it to had replaced the blower motor, however, it didn't seem to help anything. I turn the climate control on, and the blower comes on full speed, but it sounded really muffled, and just like she told me, almost no air was coming out. I opened up the cowl over the filter, and... holy crap! The thing was so stuffed full of... stuff... I couldn't believe it. Fur, leaves, dirt, seeds, pine needles... etc. I think it was the original filter. I wish I'd taken pictures... the thing was amazing. She told me that she had always taken the car to a dealer back when she first got it (used) and later to a guy that specializes in Volvos in the area. That's the guy that replaced the blower motor, which the car evidently didn't actually need. She told me that no one had ever told her about the cabin filter, or that it needed to be changed periodically. I put in a new one, and the problem went away.

Thumbs up Boom!

Worthy of a 5 year bump. Thanks for the cool tip - I have a complete unmarked donor V70 sitting beside my 855 T5. V70 is already very stripped, but now something else to grab before the crusher gets it. I'll do a thread & photos tomorrow.

Here is a nice cabin filter pic.

This one was blowing dirt through the vents on the new owner. He showed me after owning the car for 2 or 3 days. I was rolling.
