850 front speakers
I just bought a 1995 Volvo 850 turbo and the speaker in the front drivers sidedoor seems to be blown. I would like to know if anyone knows what size and type of speaker would be there. I am very sure thecarhas all stock sterioequipment and would like to know what kind of speaker would be the closest match to the stock speaker. I also do not know how to take the speaker cover or door apart to get to the speaker. Could some please let me know how to take the speaker out, and also give me a suggestion on the best replacement of that one speaker.
Thanks

I am wondering if the speaker is located at the top front side of the door on your car as well (basically if the canadain and american cars have the same setup) and I'm not too sure what a T-20 is.
Thanks for all your help though

I'm pretty sure thatI used 5.25" speakers in my front doors on my '95 850 wagon. They don't fit exactly but from what I understand, theOEM speakers aren't a standard size anyway. But I put Alpine S-type 5.25"in and used self-tapping screws to secure them in the spot. I feel like 4" in the door are too small, but take a look when you remove the speakers. Measure the opening and see if you can get a little more bump in your doors!Mine sound good to me!
Thanks for the advice, I think that I'm just going to get a higher end 4" speaker so I don't have play around with making it fit. I think that this will just be a temporary fix and then I will look into a better deck and speakers and amp. I think that an indash screen would fit really well in a volvo because the OEM deck is so big.
I need a rear door speaker as well and it is not a standard size, it off by 1/4 inch. You have to find one that best fits the hole, someone else recommend an infinity speaker that only needed a washer on one of the screws to fit, the other holes line up, I believe and the oem cover will snap back in. However I was once told not to mix the ohms on speakers. I think you will find that the stock speakers are 8 ohms and most after market speakers are 4 ohms. So I'm not sure but I think you need to change them in pairs at least. I would check with an audiophile, not just the kid that works in the stereo department at Bestbuy.
speakers usually come in pairs, so you end up probably replacing both back speakers, however, the speakers in cars are component speakers, so they have the tweeter, and the mid, and usually a low, so, buying just the speakers that fit that spot, might throw it all off.
Hey there
I used to own a '94 Acura Vigor GS http://www.cardomain.com/ride/1717298and went with a Pioneer Avic-N1 with the navi/cd/dvd/mp3 player and after all was said and done the cost was pretty large and wouldn't go that route again as there was a recall for a free flex cable repair as they were known to crack and after sending it into Pioneer Canada for the free repair they misplaced it for about three weeks. After they found it they told me that the dvd drive was shot and the cost to repair was going to be $500 after tax [:@].
I now own a '94 Volvo 850 Estate http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2434331and changed out the factory deck for a Pioneer deck with an aux. input and went with an Acer 3100 laptop($496CDN)instead of the 7" indash unit without the navi and now use the laptop for the dvd and navigation. The 15" screen is great but may not be for everyone. I went with the Garmin nRoute($140 CDN)for navigation. Upgraded the Acer from the 512mb stick that it came with to the max 4Gig ($150 CDN total), thank you Canada Ram, a laptop stand/mount which mounts to the left passenger seat post ($130 CDN), thank you eBay. Oh, and a power inverter ($40 CDN), thank you Canadian Tire.
While I will admit that this setup isn't for everyone, I rather enjoy it as I have settled on a position that will not block my view and I use windows media player for my music as I remove the laptop when I'm at home but cover it up with a black folded table cloth that I got from the Ottawa Police Assocation (thank you SGT. Damian) if I'm out and about town and have any concerns about prying eyes. The Brick has fairly dark tint up front and almost outer space black in back and people never see in the car. N.O.T.B.[sm=devilgrin.gif]
This setup wouldn't have worked in the Vigor, tight fit in that car,but in the Volvo it is a great setup and I'm really glad that I went this route as the Avic-N1($1800 CDN), after the final tally for the unit, all the extras like hands free steering wheel control unit and backup camera, oh, don't forget install($300 CDN)and the"[:@]free[:@]"flex cable/dvd drive repair($500) and you can see why I wentwith the laptopthis time.
Yes, it was nice to see the the screen pop out and up but the way I have it now, I can take the laptop out and into the pub to surf the net, check email, continue to to use bit torrent for music down loads and the girlfriend can watch her movies in the car on the long trips andI can still have my tunes.
I have noticed that alot of folks use Photo Bucket so I'll clean out the car, again, and take a bunch tisof pic's and then add the link to this, or another reply in a day or two.
Pop out units are fairly inexpensive now and there are alot to choose from for under $500. Just make sure that you check for recalls for the flex cable no matter what unit you get as this is the most vulnerable part.
No matter what though, you'll love the setup. Especially at night.

I have fould that the front speakers are 5.25" and a normal 5.25" speaker will fit but the probable is mounting them. The screw patter on the speakers did not fit properly, I have mounted the speakers with just 2 screws but it seems to work no problem. I did get speaker for the back doorsbut they are not 5.25" and have a really weird mounting system, needless to say I am sticking with the OEM speaker in the back until i decided to completely redo the sterio system.
I used 5 1/4" Infinity speakers in both the front and the rear doors. With the Infinity speakers I was able to pick up 3 of the 4 mounting screws in the front door and they don't rattle or anything. There is one screw that is much longer than the others (I can't remember which one it was) so you want toinstall the speaker so that that long screw is one of the three. I think I actually got the 4th screw to catch an edge of the mounting flange.
I used the same 5 1/4" Infinity speakers in the rear but it took a bit more creativity. The OEM speakers come in a plastic cone shaped insert that mounts to the door. The terminals from the speaker protrude through the "cone" and there is no other speaker on earth that will directly mate up. I removed the old speakers from the "cone", drilled a hole in the side - toward the front of the door - to route the new speaker wiring through and then used sheet metal screws to mount the new speaker to the cone.
At that point I scratched the paint on the door by rough fitting the cone with the sheet metal screws protruding to locate the new screws on the metal door panel anddrilled 1/4" relief holes so that the new mounting screws through the "cone" would set back flush into the door.
At that point I made the splice on the wiring and used the OEM screws to re-mount the "cone" back in the OEM holes.
For the rear deck (Sedan)I used Infinity 5x7 - 6x8, they call it both sizes - and used the OEM speakers as an adapter plate. I used an angle grinder to saw away the basket on the OEM speakers and then just used sheet metal screws to mount the new speaker in the old frame. Here is what it looks like:

At that point the speaker mounts back into the OEM box and it looks stock but sounds much better. In my case, on both 850s, the tweeter magnet had fallen off so they didn't sound at all.
For the dash speakers I used Infinity 3 1/2" speakers and I used one of the original "push pin" mounting holes to catch a single bolt. Another screw could be added but it seems to hold just fine with one. I just swiped the OEM connector and harness and soldered it to the new speaker. Here is a "through the windshield" view of the dash speaker. The tweeter magnets therehad fallen off as well.
