850 Pulls hard left when turning
When I turn right everything is normal, it drifts right a little bit so I need an alignment, but when I turn left its ok until I turn the wheel about 30 degrees, then it pulls hard left. The steering had clunked when I went in reverse and had the wheel pinned to one side, I checked everything and I saw nothing wrong. It has since stopped. Everything looks ok still, but obviously something is off. Any help is appreciated!
were you braking at the time? If not, I'd give a look at the control arm bushings, tie rods and steering rack for any worn bushings or broken clamps. I'd also check the wheel bearing issues and strut / springs.
my advise is stick with OEM quality parts - cheap imports will wear out in no time. Yes you should do both sides at the same time to keep your handling balanced. Lemforder parts can be had for about $100 per side. personally I've given up on just replacing the bushings (unless you are upgrading to poly) - buying the control arm replacement is a huge time saver.
Figured it out, forgot to post my solution here. Jacked it up and i took a pry bar and was able to make the wheel move about and inch towards the front, replaced the control arm and problem solved, turns out the previous control arm was a POS the control arm almost fell off when i loosed the bolt for the bushing. After i replaced it, everything worked as it should. No more life threatening jerking!!!
my bet is the worn control arm was a cheap after market brand. I had that experience once where my replacement lasted 60K miles so from that point I've stuck with OEM/genuine parts for suspension parts with rubber bushings. Only exception was on my 850, I installed the IPD HD sway bars and their HD end links. Totally transformed the handling of the car. If your 850 is a keeper and you find you need to do the sway bar bushings, consider the IPD upgrade. Only warning is that to install the front bar you need to drop the subframe bushing/mounts to give some room for the install so you may need a pro with a lift to do the job for you.
