I don't understand it either but today I took the car to school for the first time and its telling me that my average MPG is 15.5, my trip consisted of 5 miles freeway and around 5 miles of city driving with a total of 10 miles one way, and I always use premium gas (91 is the highest here in California) oh and I did notice that the rear wheels are toed in on both sides so I need to get it aligned soon. Thanks for both of your replies so far and hopefully tomorrow I will have time to check for shaft play on the turbo and make a video for you guys

I managed to get 16.7 on the way back, maybe she just needs to stretch her legs a little, I'll probably use her instead of my gf's car to our trip to San Diego during spring break to see the highest mpg I could get in her current state but first I have to get the wheels aligned. Btw guys I've only had the car for 3 weeks if you were wondering why today was the first time I've used it to go to school.

sadly my car didn't come with a manual when it was sold to me but I've been looking at the online version that's off Volvo's site but I haven't got to the LCD panel part yet, I'll look into it right now.

I wouldn't think that it was any kind of exhaust leak. It continues after the engine has stopped moving. It sounds like a turbo bearing to me, I have a similar sound as well, which is the turbo bearing. You can tell because it increases and decreases with the rpms. It is also somoething that is spinning freely after the engine stops, which would be the turbo.

PS Go to a junk yard and you can find an owners manual and turbo as well.

Frans, you need to read the New 850 Owner Thread. Once the car is warmed up, you should be getting 23+ mpg.

If you treat these cars right you will quickly learn that they are incredible cars. I seen a Lady at a gas station the other day in a '96 GLT and I spoke to her. We talked for a few minutes and she told me that she has a '09 Cadillac and a '12 Chrysler that she usually leaves at home to drive the 850. And the 850 needed work.

Thanks for the reply. I've been going to the junkyard every weekend since I got the car to get other things for it and the closest I got is a S90's manual lol but I'll keep looking. There are rebuild kits being sold on ebay for $32 I think I might just pick that up instead of another turbo also my intercooler pipes have oil in them so that might be another indication that the bearing is worn although I haven't seen smoke coming out of the tail pipe yet but I hope it doesn't get to that point anytime soon

The car's check engine light was on when I purchased it and when I plugged my reader in it showed codes "P0172 - System too Rich" and "P0755 - Shift Solenoid 'B' Malfunction" I replaced the PNP switch cause it had the flashing arrow around 2 weeks ago and I cleared the codes right after and the Check Engine light hasn't turned on since then. I checked the fuel filter and it seems like the previous owner just replaced it cause it looks brand new and the MAF has yellow writings on it so I'm guessing that has been replaced also, I'm just not sure about the o2 sensors, the car failed smog though on the EVAP part, the guy who smogged it told me that it has an EVAP leak, I checked the lines on the canister and sure enough a rat chewed two hole on one of them so I fixed it but idk if that plays a big part on my MPG...

They are, my dad owns a 940 Turbo with 225,XXX miles and is still running strong the only major thing that we did on it was a head gasket job cause the old gasket had a leak between the 1 and 2 cylinders BUT it still ran just far from being smooth but it ran . The previous owner(s) of my 850 didn't really take good care of it, the panels towards the bottom of the dash are missing, the hood latch cables were gone, engine bay is filthy, crud on the interior was amazing ugh but the engine was mechanically sound (at least they bothered to take care of that part of the car lol) its quiet and starts up with no problems or smoke. All mine for $1200 lol shes in good hands now, I'm putting her back together piece-by-piece
