Default '96 850 Turbo Starting Issues

'96 Turbo Wagon with 140k. Its starts everytime but starting yesterday (day after I got back from 1500 mile road trip) it idles rough and misses, and there is smoke (smells like gas)coming from the exhaust. This will only last a few moments, maybe 20 seconds or so, then its fine. I have had no issues with the car and it runs excellent aside from the breif starting issue. It seems to only happen when the car is cold. I really dont have any idea what would cause this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

first check airfilter, then MAF, then purge valve.

Any code you get?

thanks for the reply. there has not been any codes, but from what i understand about this year model is that everytime you turn it off the complete OBD system resets itself (had problem with smog shops because of this). If this is true, i probably havent driven it far enough since the problem started for the error to register. I really hope a error comes up because this bothers me since i do alot of road trips with the car. thanks again

I had the same problem after a road trip in my 96 850 turbo sedan - it only happened the first 2 times I started the car after the car sat overnight after the trip - then it went back to normal with no recurrence.

I don't think the OBD resets every time it is started. It may scan each time it starts, but I had to get a code reader to actually clear a code that I had fixed.

The I/M monitors probably reset each time you start the car. Mine 97 GLT has this problem.

so funny, the car is fine now. just like the other volvo, it did it a couple times now its fine. so strange that on previous road trips, nothing like this happens. I guess its just a volvo quirk, which i'm fine with because thats nothing compared with other cars i've owned!!! thanks for the help anyway!!!!
