I have a 97 Volvo 850, the gear shift seemed to have developed a more permanent condition of being stuck in park position. I release the gear shift from park by the release button on the right. This situation crept up gradually over the last year. In the past year I noticed the gear shift sticks for few seconds then releases itself. However lately it does not release itself unless the release button/switch is depressed.
Does any one out there have a clue on how to fix this.

Hi and welcome to the site.

You likely have an ignition switch problem. Turn the key back just a tiny bit to see if it helps.

 

 

Is there a test that could be performed that would point to the cause or reason for "gear stuck in park" problem. I have no problem replacing the ignition switch but what if it is not the problem.
Could it be the PNP neutral switch stuck or need replacement??

I did turn the key slightly several times I also did the gearshift back and forth aver 10 times but the gearshift is still stuck in park and would not release unless I depress the switch on the right of the gear shifter.
