Default axles replaced -- shakes at high speeds

Just had my 96 850 Volvo serviced at 90,000 miles. The mechanics replaced the axles, and now the car's steering column will sometimes shake violently for a brief period of time when traveling at 45-65 MPH.

What might be the cause of this? Is it safe for me to drive on the freeway back to my mechanic?

I would drive it easy back to them and have them fix it.

Do you have any idea what specifically might be causing this problem?

Actually rethinking here double check the lugs first to make sure they are tight.

If that is all good then maybe the axle might be bad.

Could be something realted to wheel balanceing as well but if started immediately after the axle replacement, then its something wrong on that end. Let them fix it.

If they fiddled with the struts-to-knuckles to get the axles in, you would need alignment after work was done.
