Blue Smoke From Start

Blue Smoke From Start
Hello Folks,
I noticed yesterday that when accelerating from a stop that there is a puff of blue
smoke coming from the exhaust. I checked to see if blue smoke was coming out from
an idle stop, and there was none.
My mechanic suspects that it may be from the turbo and that is what he will focus on
first. He said that a new turbo unit was around $990.00.
Do you think that a new turbo unit on this car may cause other problems due to the increased
pressure of a new turbo unit sitting on top of an old car? Here is the car info.
1996 850 Turbo
Automatic Transmission
Approximately 146,000 miles
Thanks in advance

RE: Blue Smoke From Start
Bashk,
Your mechanic is most likely correct, BUT....
When moving from a stop smoke can also be
Valve Guide Seals
Clogged Turbo Drain
PCV System
Bashk, how mechanically inclined are you and what kind of tools to you have available?
Valve Guide seals are not something to mess with unless you are an accomplished mechanic.
The Turbo Drain and PCV are something a beginner can accomplish and there are how-to's on this forum to help.
If you can do more than just check and change oil. Example, if you were competant enough to say do a complete tuneup and maybe a brake job, then you can rebuild your own Turbo.
Rebuilding the Turbo only requires a few tools, good jack, jack stands and some patience. A good kit is about $100 and it can be done in 1 day maybe 2 if you take your time.
Let me know if you would like to attempt the Turbo rebuild I have done it myself and I am going to do it again because I chose a CHEAP kit and something is bothering me about it.
