Default brake lights stay on

I have a 94 850 sedan, and the brake lights stay on during driving (sometimes) and after the car is turned off. Sometimes they come on in the middle of the night after the car has been parked and the brake lights are off (when it was parked). I've been wedging something under the pedal to lift it up high enough so that the switch isn't engaged after I park it. Can this easily be fixed (ie--by me)?
Also have been thinking about getting a repair manual for my car--is it worth the money? And will it tell me how to fix stuff like this?
Thanks for any help!

Default RE: brake lights stay on

While we are waiting for Tech to anwer this,

My other non-Volvo vehicles have two identical switches attached to the brake pedal. One of them is used for brake lights and the other is used by cruise control. Could the switch be sticking?

Remove the lower dash panel. Then look up by the top of the brake pedal. Find the brake light switch. It is not the one with the Vaccum line going to it. The switch is adjustable. Push the pedal down and push in on the switch. You should heer it click and feel it move. Then let the pedal up and give a small pull on it to make sure it is up all the way. See if that helps.
