Default Can a 850 auto trans be repair???

I am just finishing a swap of trans from car to car because here in Puerto Rico nobody can repair a 850 auto trans, now I have a bad trans sitting in my garage. When i look on the repair manuals it said if the trans have internal problems change it for another one, what???, also you cant change the filter because you will have to open up the trans. why volvo do this??? Please reply I really like these cars but this trans problems make me to think about the quality of this cars, In the past i have several 850 including turbos all end it with the same problem. I know that someone is going to said routine change of fluids, ok that is good, but my question is can I repair the trans?? Suppose you will want to keep the car for life, sometime in the life of the car the trans will go bad, what then do you do?????

It'd probably be easier to just buy a used transmission rather than rebuilding it.....

The AW50-42LE gearbox is usually not repairable and Volvo recommends replacement only. Also, there is no filter in this unit.

If you specify the model year & trouble symptom, someone here may know repair procedure but I wouldn't count on it.

Then why we want a car that if a trans goes bad internally we cant fix it and have to get a new one or a good??? used one??? and then you will know that the trans and work ussually will cost more than the car itself. That does not make sence to me. I think Volvo loose big time on these.

Well since you replaced the transmission and have an extra one to mess around with, I would try taking it apart and see if you can fix it. If not, you are only out the time it takes to take it apart. I'm sure it's repairable, but it might be hard to get parts.

They can be repaired but as Jim said parts may be hard to find. There is a service manual for them on ATSG's website. It is $30 to download the manual and $50 to buy a print copy. It covers all the electrical stuff and detailed disassembly of the entire transmission. The link is below:

Good luck.

I'm about 99.9% sure there is a filter, but it isn't designed to be replaced and as such is buried deep within the unit.

You could be right but it is not a serviceable unit even if there was one as you say.

Is it worth pulling the transmission oil pan and cleaning anything or, just flush the fluid? I've got an oil extractor and can suck out about 4.5Qts at a time.
