Can I add the trip computer to my car?
I have a 97 850 that I just recently purchased. The previous owner had the odometer failure and took it to an independent mech. who replaced the instrument cluster with one that had the trip computer display in it. The original did not have the trip computer. I was replacing some bulbs on it this weekend and noticed it is a small 5 pin connector that I assume runs from the cluster to the switch on the dash. I found a used switch but do not have a wiring harness that I can see. The dealer says I need the whole wiring harness for the entire dash for $500 but I found a guy online who can get a cable for $26 That sounds more like what I need. Does anyone know if the cable is there from the factory even if the car had no trip computer? If not, is the cable from the cluster to the switch all I need? (Please say yes) [&:] Surely you don't need an entire wiring harness with just that little 5 pin deal in it. This had to have been available aftermarket.
Thanks in advance

RE: Can I add the trip computer to my car?
Just to add to this,,, I got an info switch from Crystal at Swedish Engineering and one of the members here sent me this link with pictures of the upgrade. It is not written in English but pictures say a thousand words.

I have a harness on order from Crystal for $10 so I hope to get it and have this working by the middle of the week depending on my work week. I will try to take photos and include some part numbers in case anyone ever decides to do this.

RE: Can I add the trip computer to my car?
robrike,
Since it can definitely be done on the S70, I would think that doing it on the 850 would be really likely since they are very similar cars. See this post for more info - https://volvoforums.com/m_67469/tm.htm

RE: Can I add the trip computer to my car?
Guys, someone's got to know how to help me on this one.... PLEASE HELP!
I've got a trip computer that I want to put into my car (p/n 6849308) but i've run into connection issues.
I've got a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT Wagon (2.4L 5cyl. NA) with a Yazaki instrument cluster (though the connection looks the same as in the photos from the russian website above, which I think is a VDO cluster.)
The current display in my car has the clock and temp gauge - it has a large green connector going into it (just like the russian website). But the trip computer has a pigtail connector on it with a small green connection in the middle for the info. switch. Obviously the green connector is not going to work with this pigtail on the new computer.
I tried disassembling the back of the instrument cluster to get to the connection of this large green cable that's currently on there to see if that's what I needed to do - remove the current cable to connect this pigtail. Well, I took the circuit board off and got to the little white connector that's on it - but cannot get the current cable off. I'm thinking it's soldered or glued on - it ain't coming off.
So is there an adapter I need to purchase or something?
Can I use this trip computer in my car? It fits perfectly in the spot and i've got the wiring harness and switch that controls it. Seems to be compatible - but then again, it's not obviously compatible as is.
IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE? CAN SOMEONE STEER ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?

I keep hearing it'll just work, but I haven't tried it. I have a 94 turbo out here in my driveway that has the trip computer on it.
I do know that my 95 N/A 5 speed does not have motronic fuel injection to begin with. It has the older-style system with a separate computer for ignition. I think it's likely you need one from the same fuel injection, that is if jetronic can support it at all.
