Default can't seem to get a cluster that all the gauges work on.

Okay, so i bought a used 850 the other day.... noticed the gas gauge didn't work... (i just thought it was empty) so i go to try and put gas in it and gas comes pouring out of the side of the car. Noticed when it did get empty the light came on, so i figured it was the gauge. Today while i was at pull-a-part i pulled a cluster along with a few other things. Get out to the parking lot, hook the new one up.. wow, gas gauge! So i go to take off and notice the speedometer doesnt work. I ended up going back in and buying another one, same thing.. all the other gauges work but the speedometer. So i take my original one apart, and the one from the junkyard.. and put the actual gauge from the one at the junkyard into mine, put it together... no gas gauge. I also tried vice-versa, taking my speedo gauge from my original one and putting into one of the junkyard ones.. still no speedo..

So it's like i'm forced to pick between a speedo and a fuel gauge. Any ideas?

Could have bad solider joints where the wires meet the board from the top plug. Also, mine had a few wires on top of the harness that were broken inside and I had to splice in a new plug.

I ended up figuring it out, it had something to do with the type of cluster i was pulling.... the two i pulled were bright white plastic on back and had a different PCB than my original one (even though they both said VDO) I went back and pulled two more.. both had dingy yellow plastic and had a transistor with a heatsink sticking out of the top.. both of those work perfectly.

No, they all say VDO made in germany (with the clock module being made in sweden). The difference seems to be in PCB revision.. the newer one has a white plastic housing and all the componets are covered in red/clear anti-corrosion stuff.. the one my car had was a yellowish color and had a heatsink sticking out of the top towards the back.. the only difference on the face is mine didn't have the snowflake beside the red led that tells you it's too cold, and the newer ones had it. (i have a 95)
