Can't shift out of Park
Hello,
I've been searching around the forums and online and I can't seem to find a solution to my problem. My 1995 850 will not shift out of Park, even when I press the shift lock override button. In addition, the button on the stick does not depress. I can offer more details as needed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You likely have a problem with the switch at your brake pedal. Sometimes it moves just a little and will not depress when you press on the brake pedal. Get a flash light and look down there where your brake pedal is. Push the brake pedal with your had and if you do not hear the click sound, you likely have to adjust your little switch a little.
Post back please.

Ignition switch?

Could it be a new PNP switch?

There is a switch at the brake pedal that you should hear click. I suppose it is working since you DO hear a click somewhere.
I would guess that the PNP switch could be bad, but likely will not stop you for being able to shift the car out of park with the use of the override button. But I'm not sure.
Also, if the car starts, not sure that would stop it from getting out of park. That override button should be a fail safe. I would remove the center console and see what is going on with the cable that goes from the ignition to the shifter. Not sure how that system compares to the 960 but I did a little write up on it. Look at it to see if it helps. I was able to shift override with my problem. But looking at the post & pics, you will see a cable problem that has a shim in it.

I fixed the problem! This is going to sound pretty stupid, but for some reason the plastic casing around the metal rod that is the shifting stick got stuck, making the button unable to be pressed. I took a rubber mallet and hit it a couple of times, pushing the casing down, and this did it. It makes me wonder if anyone unwittingly opened up the center console to replace a switch, then when putting it back together put the casing on correctly (though this may just be wishful thinking on my part, hoping that others are as dumb as I am).

I could not get my 96 850 out if park unless I pushed the emergency shift release. Come to find out, the circuit that energizes the shift unlock solenoid runs through the ignition key cylinder, which is designed to spring the ignition key cylinder a slight amount counterclockwise after car has started. Mine did not; however when I moved the key a minute amt. counter clockwise, the shift unlocked. The problem was in the switch.
