Exclamation Clicking noise when turning!

Hello... My 1994 volvo 850 turbo wagon is making a clicking noise when i turn.. the noise comes from the right side. I checked under the car and the CV boot on the right side is torn... Do i need to change just the CV boot or all the drive shaft? is it a gard job? can it be just lack of grease?? is it dangerous if i keep driving the car like that?

from some experience yes get it fixed ASAP.. should be about $100 if the CV joint didn't dry out and fail.. otherwise its lots more. The whole reason the for the clicking is the lack of grease on the joint because the boot is torn.

Hope this helps

the link that i posted above is a new one i believe.

1)Loosen axle nut (36mm socket)
2)Push in on the axle so it can move freely in the hub (or tap with plastic hammer, wood block works fine to, just not anything that will damage it)
3)Jack up the vehicle and remove the wheel
4)Remove brake caliper and brake disc (you night not NEED to do this, but it will make the job easier in the long run)
5)***Only if on the passanger side of the car***
go under the car on the passenger side and look up, you will see two bolts holding a bearing for the drive axel. Remove those two bolts.
CAUTION! The axle may drop down so take awareness of where you are located.
6)Remove the 3 bottom ball joint nuts
7)Push down on the control arm while lifting out the ball joint from the control arm (the strut can hang there). NOTE! the control arm is spring loaded so you may need to put some force into pushing it down.
8)Remove axle from hub
9)Pull axle out from side of car (this may be easyer if you are under the car and pass it out to someone waiting by the hub side) NOTE! The axle *snaps* into the tranny, so you might need to give it a slight tug.
To install:
1)Reverse steps 1-9

hope that helps, i just did it quick so feel free to post or pm with any more questions.

my 96 does the clicking, but only in poor traction, passenger side. ice and snow, with or without winter mode on, and only when turning. same thing?

Thanks tony850 for the write up, i will do it tomorrow, i hope it is not a hard work.
Flamejet, i dont know if it is the same. Mine does that clicking sound when turning, it doesnt matter if it is with or without winter mode or economy or sport, it always does the sound.

all winter mode does is keep you in a low gear ratio (third gear) on take off so you dont spin and easy (less torque) so the physical mode of the trans does not matter when you are talking about the axle (unless its SUPER fast acceleration that your trying to make a point on).

flame jet, your issue might be that traction control is kicking in and thats when you hear the click, make a new thread so be dont bug up porlagran's thread.

porlagran - let me know how it goes, post if you have issues with anything.

p.s. you might need large breaker bar and/or a pipe to break the axle nut loose.

Hello... I have it almost done, I replaced the half shaft but i broke one of the bolts, but i will get it later, the rest is done, just waiting to get one of the bolts that support the axle... I also broke the back part of the rotor while i was trying to take out the ball joint, but fortunately i had one replacement... everything is on place now, just waiting for that part... thanks for the help!

how were you taking off the balljoint? everything should of been by hand at that point so im confused how you broke something. were you trying to take it out from the top side of the balljoint?

Yeap... it was really tight, i tried to loose it but it didnt work, so i used a stick to push up the caliper and the balljoint down sticking it between them and thats when i broke it... i didnt know how to take it out.

My '93 850 turbo with manual gears makes a ticking noise.... but only in curves to the right !

It seems, when I press the clutch in that curve, it is away .. I think I also hear more noise when i change gears..

It started a while ago.. in winter i thing i dammaged som
ething.. It seemed that there was resistance felt as I made right turns.. some times a single tick heard..

Not in left turnes !!

this resistance is no longer felt, but i hear a repeating, loud tick in right curves.... agian, not in left turnes.. As I press clutch, the noise dissapears..

I am somewhat confused..

during mot people have replaced some balljoints, and I think the rubber cover of the homokinetic..

since then , after a while i hear this ticking when i turn in fully to the right, with gear in..

It cannot be the homokinetic, since it doesn't have the noise in full left turns ???

What am I overseeing ?

Thanks !

Luck,

Fox.

Hi.. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I am Dutch, and in the same small village were the 66, 300,400 and 40 series V

olvo were made. My 850 was assembled in Gent, Belgium by the way.

The European and English name for the drive shaft is homokinetic joint .. We call em like that on the 480club europe forum ( I have a volvo480ESturbo too )

I will have a look at it, I think it got dammaged... Some joints are stuck too, as they make noise, and I feel a resistance in curves that I take all the way...

Must look at it soon.. Thanks !

Luck,

Jeanpaul
