As long as the timing marks are pretty close and you press the cover down slowly you will be fine.
You can use lamps to press it down some then put all the screws in and work all the way around and snug them down to seat it all the way.

SWEET! that sounds great. Thanks much for your help! I've ordered the gasket kit from FCP but will probably reuse the bolts (locktight anyone?) I'll let you know how it goes.

I would do new head bolts though.
If you ever need to take it apart again there is a good chance they will break instead of coming out. They are stretch bolts.

just wonderen what else to change when you have the head gasket being replaced
like the timing belt water pump and were is the cheapest place to get them

I would replace it all. Timing belt,tensioner,idler,water pump.
You might also want to inspect the Vent box as well since it is right there.

The Vent box is part of the PCV system.
