Default cracked headlight lens

A rock got me yesterday and cracked the passenger side headlight lens. Just for yucks I called Volvo and the service guy asked if my 94 had a sunroof. I said yes and he replied I would have to buy the entire headlight assembly for $330.00+ because my car was an alter2 vs and alter1. When I asked for a more understandable explanation he couldn't give me one. I looked on ebay and found MVP-Imports that sell a glass lens, gasket and clips for the 850 for $37.99 plus shipping. I called them up and they said they have sold hundreds of them and that was all I needed to fix the problem. Is the Volvo dealer blowing smoke? Anyone bought a lens from the ebay vendor and replaced theirs? I just seems ludicrous that the whole assembly must be replaced. IF that is the case I will leave it until I have to replace it.

Yes I bought the lens for my 94 850. I think it was closer to $100.00 though, but it was quite some time ago. The dealer wants to sell the whole assembly not just the lens. The only problem I had was that the new lens did not match the other side. Made the original one look yellow. So I bought a replacement lens for that side too. $37.99 sounds pretty cheap, but you can definitely get a lens and replace it yourself. By the way mine was a 94 850 Turbo with a sunroof. Another route would be to try used car parts, but I would just buy the new lens.

I have replaced the lens on the 940, 960 and the 850 without any problems. Our dealers recommend this on cost grounds.

If the lens is held on to the rear of the unit by spring clips it can definitely be changed. However, do not leave it too long before doing it as the reflecting silver surface will deteriorate very quickly if moisture gets in through the crack.

If you do change the lens use the new clips supplied to get as tight a seal as possible. My friend used the old clips on his 940 and moisture was into the unit in no time - new unit required.

Thanks to all. I checked again and the price is 37.99 plus shipping. That includes the lense, new clips and gasket. I think I am going to buy both the right and left so they match. I verified they are glass and the same as OEM, they just don't say Volvo.

Buy some E-codes from FCP Groton for about $65 a pop. Or replacement ones for like I think 99 bucks or so a pop.
